Description
86 letters relating to the career of George Ashton and his association with King Edward VII and with the theatrical names of the day. In general they are concerned with Ashton's theatrical business. The first autograph album is an eclectic mix. There are letters from well known figures of the day such as Ellen Terry and Lillie Langtry and also letters of thanks from actors whom Ashton had given parts in his entertainments. Most of the letters in the second autograph book are communications from royalty or on similar matters. These include requests to organise the entertainment at Cowes week and thanks for arranging a gala for the annual fete for the National Life-boat Association. The death of King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra's first son is marked by a letter of sympathy from Ashton and a ticket to the funeral in St George's Chapel.
