Description | Julian Clary interviewed by John Pidgeon at The Sound Company, London, for 'Talking Comedy', a BBC Radio 2 programme in which comedians talk about the people that make them laugh. This is the unedited interview, not the programme as broadcast. John Pidgeon [JP] asks about the things that made Julian Clary [JC] laugh every week. JC appreciated Hilda Baker and had a glossary of her phrases. Liked Peter Cook. He read books that his mum gave him of Patrick Campbell. [7:20] Talks about the times when 'gay slang' was used inconspicuously in comedy. JC enjoyed Kenneth Williams, Frankie Howard and Larry Grayson because of the variety of characters he invented. [15:30] Went to see 'Blankety Blank' with Les Dawson. Came across him from childhood, He reminded him of his grandfather. Larry Grayson is someone he watched from an early stage, and enjoyed seeing him be himself. JC decided to accentuate his mannerisms and be comfortable with who he was. JP asked when he decided to do comedy. JC speaks about experiences with his family who were funny. He loved listening to conversations he heard on the bus and almost 'perform' it to his family to make them laugh. He started doing a comedy act at 21, firstly wanting to be an actor. [22:27] In 1980 he got an acting job with Covent Garden Community Theatre where he met Andy Cunningham (does Bodger and Badger for BBC children). [27:38] States that he can't stand Billy Connolly. [29:20] Talks about 'My Struggles' by Paul Merton and enjoyed it. Enjoys the confrontational humour of Ruby Wax. [32:20] JC says he finds American comedy exclusive.
