Description
This file consists largely of correspondence during 1939 with Victor Gollancz Ltd. and with Victor Gollancz personally about rallies, meetings and publications, including ongoing problems (caused largely by war-time shortages of paper) with reprints and future editions of "Socialist Sixth of the World". Much of the correspondence deals with the parlous state and uncertain future of the Left Book Cub. Much of this correspondence is routine and administrative, but some is not. Critical and personal questions to Johnson about how he reconciles his personal wealth and affluent lifestyle with his espousal of communism. May 1939 Correspondence with Random House about a possible American edition of "Socialist Sixth of the World". October 1939 Letters from Victor Gollancz about the impact of the Non-Aggression Pact signed between Germany and Russia and the Russian invasion of Finland in 1939. September-December 1939. There is also a small amount of later correspondence from 1956.
