DescriptionThis file consists mainly of correspondence (principally to and from Miss Margaret Babington, Festival Director and Steward) about the Canterbury Festival in the early 1930s. Issues include: the withdrawal of the BBC Orchestra conducted by Adrian Boult; the commissioning of a new play (Murder in the Cathedral) from T S Eliot; the moving of the Reculver columns in the crypt; the painting by Nowell of the Aix Tapestries; the gift and commissioning of the bell of HMS Canterbury; the possibility of a great Empire Service; Professor Tristram's painting of the murder of Becket on the west panel of Henry IV's tomb; and the retirement of Margaret Babington in 1958.; The accounts are included for the 1935 Festival, recording the cost of the first production of "Murder in the Cathedral" as £238 4s 11d.
NotesEvery morning at eleven o'clock the Bell Ceremony takes place at the Warriors Chapel of St. Michael. The Verger rings the ship's bell from H.M.S. Canterbury, and prayers are said by the Chaplain for all who have died in conflict, and for peace in the world. An old soldier then marches to the Book of Remembrance in the Chapel and turns the page
