Title
Press cuttings relating to the Melville family
Name of creator
Melville, Andrew III, 1912-1988, actor
Date
1816-1985
Description
The file consists of press cuttings collected by the family. Some are loose and some in albums.
There was no apparent order so they have been sorted into family, person and place. The cuttings cover a wide range of subjects including play reviews, obituaries and profiles of other theatrical people. These include John Le Mesurier who married June Melville and other well known actors such as Sir Laurence Olivier.
The Melvilles were obviouly interested in anything to do with the theatre and collected cuttings concerned with theatres both in London and the provinces. These include events affecting individual theatres such as closure and also different ways theatres might be affected by outside events such as the First World War and licensing laws. There is also a section concerned with David Lloyd George in 1903.
Many of the cuttings are in poor condition especially one album which has loose sheets and the extracts are suffering badly from wear and tear. The loose pages of this album have been put into plastic sheets to protect them and make them acccesible. Also included in this section are a series of pictures mainly taken from The Sketch concerned with pantomimes in London and the Provinces. These show cast members and also details about the pantomime genre.
