| Description | One scrapbook comprising newspaper cuttings, prints, postcards and photographs of the actress Marie Tempest [Susan Mary Etherington] (1864-1942), mostly mounted (with additional loose material between endpapers). The scrapbook also includes images of the following: her second husband Cosmo Stuart or Gordon-Lennox, and co-stars Simon Dale and Frank Cooper. The images depict Tempest both in and out of role, in costume and in everyday dress, demonstrating the actress’ increasing celebrity as well as commemorating some of her most famous roles (including parts in The fencing master, An artist’s model, San Toy, The Geisha girl, A Greek slave, Becky Sharp [adapted from Vanity Fair], The taming of the shrew, Art and opportunity, Dorothy, At the barn, and Esther Castways).
The scrapbook has been created out of a repurposed publication entitled Players of the Day Part VII (Mrs. Cecil Raleigh – Mr. Huntley Wright – Miss Evie Greene – Mr Arthur Bourcher), published by George Newnes Limited. Any material that originally pertained to these persons is absent and the compiler of the scrapbook is unknown. The only indication of a date of compilation exists on a cutting present in the scrapbook, taken from The Sketch for Feb. 12, 1913.
