TitleVideo of 'Parliament to Parliament' on Thames Television, 1991
Date1991
Extent1 videocassette (VHS, 60 min.)
DescriptionThe film is a recording of 'Parliament to Parliament', a live broadcast in London and Moscow, shown on Thames Television of a debate between a selection of MP's in Westminster and a group of parliament delegates in the Kremlin in Moscow. Following a brief tour of the Palace of Westminster and site of the new parliament in Moscow, the programme is introduced by Henry Kelly in London and Leonid Zolotarevsky in Moscow, who conduct a session of questions and answers between the two groups of people on the themes of democracy, economics and foreign relations. The debate on democracy touches on the issues of the role of opposition parties, the need for devolution for regions in both countries and the expectations of the public for reform in the Soviet Union. The questions about the economy revealed different perceptions in the two countries of the effects of the Thatcher years and showed the political divisions in the British reponses. The debate on foreign relations was centred on the future role of NATO and the relationship of the Soviet Union to the European Community.
