| Description | The film was commissioned by Croydon Council and concerns a conference and exhibition sponsored by the Council and the Architectural Foundation in 1993, in which links were made between architectural design and Croydon's economic prosperity. The conference, also called 'Croydon, the Future', was attended by 380 delegates, representatives of businesses and also community figures. The film covers the progress of the conference, shows the exhibition and contains interviews of key figures attending and speaking at the conference. The interviews are carried out by Robin Houston and those interviewed include Lord Weatherill, who gives his memories of Croydon 30 years before and its redevelopment after the War. He also is shown given the opening address at the conference. Other people interviewed were the Leader of Croydon Council, Sir Peter Bowness who commented that Croydon appeared 'dull, dreary and dated'; David Wechsler, the Chief Executive of Croydon Council; Richard Burdett on behalf of the Architectural Foundation about the linking of good design with a thriving economy; Sir John Harvey-Jones, who was the keynote speaker at the Conference; Mary Walker, the leader of the Opposition on Croydon Council; and Sir Richard Rogers, Chairma of the Architectural Foundation. All those interviewed emphasised the need to change Croydon's image with the city centre particularly in mind and that future developments must be made as a result of the partnership of residents, businesses and the Council. |
