DescriptionParliamentary Debates (Hansard) House of Commons. 6th series, Vol 125 No 73. Friday, 15 January 1988. London, HMSO. Concerns the debate on the second reading of the Protection of Offical Information Bill and the opening speech by Richard Shepherd. Includes a lengthy note by Weatherill giving an account of 'an example of disreputable behaviour on the part of the Govt Whips' in which the Whips and the 1922 Committee imposed a three line Whip and so stifled debate on a sensitive issue to avoid a major split in the Conservative Party. Weatherill states 'it is difficult to calculate possible future damage to my reputation'.
