TA says the writing about alternative comedy was bollocks. Recalls a gig at the Hackney Empire with Ben Elton, and Lenny Bruce. [00:40] TA wanted to be the 'southern Billy Connolly'. TA recalls comedians at the time were in different alternative theatre groups (TA was in Rough Theatre, Alexei Sayle was in the Threepenny Theatre [ph], Keith Allen was in the Crystal Theatre, Jim Barclay in the MayDay). Grant situation was bad; TA didn't want the economics to determine the style of comedy. [1:45] Comedy Store had started and Alexei Sayle was performing. TA started performing alternative comedy in 1979. Mentions those that performed at the Comedy Store; Keith Allen, Jim Barclay, Les Dawson, Lenny Bennett, Andy de la Tour, Alexei Sayle compering. Mentions the style of the performers was varied between 'Cambridge Footlights' and those that wanted to be in the style of The Comedians.
