Journey in China 1956 The diary continues to narrate details of Hewlett, Nowell, Kezia and Keren's trip to China commenced in August 1956. The full page daily entries begin "September 11th (Continued)" and end on October 11th. There are very detailed descriptions of places visited and people they met including sightseeing at Chungking, Kunming, Yunnan and visits to schools, churches, a workers sanitorium, the Great Wall and 'Rocky Forest'. Hewlett and Nowell Johnson met members of the Christian community at Kunming, Peace Committee members at Peking (September 24th) and various individuals such as the Rev. Chau Fua Sha, Rewi Alley, Madame Kung and Archbishop Robin Chen at a YMCA tea on September 29th. Details are also given concerning the celebrations of China's National Day on October 1st when they met Mao Tse Tung and Chou En Lai. One of Nowell's last entries recounts a visit to the Lama priests of Ulan Bator on October 4th shortly after which the family returned home via Moscow. 9.1956-10.1956
