| Description | Item 1 -- the folder in which this material was contained with the following note by Christopher Calthrop; "N.B. Russell E. Smith planned to write a biography of Boucicault while he was on the staff of the <u>San Diego Union</u> and later. He claimed to have discovered the Ms. biography of Robert Gaul (or Paul) B's valet, a confidant. These are his letters to Barry Duncan, theatre historian and book seller, and carbons of Barry's replies. None of the information has been checked and should be 'taken' with caution.";. Item 2 -- letters from Russell E. Smith to Barry Duncan, many undated (22 letters);. Item 3 -- carbons of letters from Russell E. Smith to Barry Duncan, faint and difficult to decipher (27 sheets), with occasional annotations by Christopher Calthrop; item 4 -- letters from Barry Duncan to Russell E. Smith (17 letters); item 5 -- typed and handwritten notes, probably by both R. E. Smith and Barry Duncan (23 items); item 6 -- notes by Christopher Calthrop, a transcript of a letter from Smith to Duncan, a money order counterfoil showing that Calthrop paid Barry Duncan £21, and a letter from a Mrs. Gaul informing Christopher Calthrop that she is not a relative of the Robert Gaul he is interested in. |
