[Green Bank, Bowness, Windermere]: Written on verso: 'Green Bank, Bowness, Windermere, where Mrs. Crowe joined her family in the early autumn of 1857 after an unsatisfactory summer holiday in Rhineland. She liked this "very pretty cottage" and told Mrs. Milner Gibson she might spend the winter there "instead of going to Bath, as I intended."
[No. 16, Randolph Crescent, Edinburgh]: Written on verso: 'No. 16, Randolph Crescent, Edinborough, a house similar in many ways to No. 2, Darnaway Street. Again a very poor photograph, taken on a wet evening.'
[Lower Harley Place, Clifton, Bristol]: Written on verso: 'Lower Harley Place, Clifton, Bristol. Photograph by Geoffrey Larken.'
[entrance to Granton Pier]: Written on verso: 'The block of grey stone Georgian houses at the entrance to Granton Pier, where Mrs. Crowe lodged 1843-45. The photograph is lamentable and gives the merest impression of the building.'
[Craigcrook Castle]: Written on verso: 'Craigcrook Castle, which dates from 1545, became the summer residence in Edinburgh of Lord Francis Jeffrey (1793-1850), in 1815. Jeffrey made some alterations and reconstruction, employing the architect William H. Playfair, and occupied the Castle until he died.'
[Craigcrook Castle]: Written on verso: 'Craigcrook Castle on the outskirts of Edinburgh, with the stone steps leading down into the garden and a short balustrade, which seems to be all that remains of what was once a terrace. Jeffrey wrote to Dickens, 20th. July 1841, of "that nice day we strolled on my little terrace and wooed the sylvan muse (in the shape of Mrs. Crowe!) in the shades of Dalmeny..." |
