| Description | The Rumseys pay £1500 for land at ‘Ash next Ridley’, in Kent. Mrs Rumsey is the partner funding the purchase, and although her husband stands for her in the legal discussions, the deed states the land now belongs to her and her descendants. £500 (plus interest) goes to Collison and Grece to release the land from mortgage, and the remaining £1000 goes to Locke. Description of land involved also included.
At the base of Conveyance: There are 5 identical red seals, each depicting the profile of an old bearded man. The seals clearly once had very fine detailing, but have now been mostly flattened. All but Grece’s have their surname signed after the seal – Grece has his middle initial written after as well. The signatures are set out thus: Left: ‘Caroline I. F. Collison’, and beneath is ‘Clair. J. Grece’; Centre: ‘Samuel Gurney Rumsey’; Right: ‘Richard Locke’, and beneath is ‘Lilian Beatrice Rumsey’ |
| Notes | Lilian Rumsey appears to have started to sign her name too close to Locke’s at the base of the conveyance, as there is an ‘L’ in between their names which matches her handwriting and is set above where she starts to sign her name beneath.
There are four large printed paper stamps glued in the left hand margin. They are printed in red ink and read, from top to bottom; ‘TEN SHILLINGS’, ‘ONE POUND’, ‘THREE POUNDS’, and ‘THREE POUNDS’. Above the stamps ‘£7 – 107 –’ is written in pencil. |
