| Description | Material relating to Dion Boucicault's activities in Bristol under the pseudonym Lee Moreton. Item 1 -- 8 letters from a correspondent at The Society for Theatre Research in response to enquiries from Christopher Calthrop about Bouciault's activities in Bristol as Lee Moreton. They address such issues as -- the question of the identity of Lee Moreton with a later Mr. Moreton on Bristol playbills; that Boucicault "'rewrote' the characters he played", e.g. turned a Cockney into an Irish character; Boucicault's first appearance in Bristol in NICHOLAS NICKLEBY; some newspaper notices, 1838-1839, from Cheltenham, Bristol and London, in which Lee Moreton is mentioned; and appearances by Lee Moreton at a Theatre in Richmond (Surrey) in 1840; there is also a response to an enquiry about an actor called Mr. Jones;. Item 2 -- 1 letter from a correspondent at the Department of Drama at Bristol University confirming that Lee Moreton was a member of the company of the Theatre Royal, Bristol in 1839;. Item 3 -- 1 note from the Keeper of the Theatre Collection, Department of Drama, Bristol University, ordering 3 Theatre Royal playbills (21st, 24th and 30th September 1841) from Christopher Calthrop, accompanied by an invoice and a receipt;. Item 4 -- 1 letter from the City Librarian, Bristol Public Libraries, informing Calthrop that most of the issues of the local press for 1841 yield no information about the identity of Mr. Moreton (as opposed to Lee Moreton), but that some issues still need to be checked;. Item 5 -- a note in Calthrop's hand to the effect that "it appears unlikely that the 'Mr. Moreton' who acted at Bristol in March 1841 was Lee Moreton alias D. B.", with evicence for this conclusion;. Item 6 -- a letter from Charles H. Shattuck referring Calthrop to Alan S. Downer, author of The Eminent Tragedian; William Charles Macready for information about Boucicault as Lee Moreton, and to Barry Duncan, author of The St. James's Theatre - Its Strange and Complete History 1835 - 1957 for information about Boucicault in general. |
| The correspondents are -- Kathleen Barker of The Society of Theatre Research; George Rowell of the Department of Drama, Bristol University; Alan Brooke Barnett, Keeper of the Theatre Collection of the Drama Department, Bristol University; W. S. Haugh (?), City Librarian, Bristol Public Libraries; Charles H. Shattuck. |
