DescriptionMaterial relating to Dion Boucicault's activities between 1844 and 1848, in particular his sojourns in France and on Jersey. Item 1 -- typed excepts from The Era between 4th of February 1844 and 9th January 1848, mentioning which of Boucicault's plays were being performed in London and how they were received;. Item 2 -- handwritten excerpts from The Era between 6th June and 26th September 1847;. Item 3 -- handwritten excerpt from the Illustrated London News, 15th August 1846, quoting from a speech by Benjamin Webster on the closing night of the Haymarket season; "Bourcicault" is mentioned alonside the names of other playwrights;. Item 4 -- two air letters from Christopher Calthrop to Albert E. Johnson, citing extracts from The Era in 1846 and 1847; Calthrop has found "one indication that DB was in London during his 'French years'";. Item 5 -- a note headed "Research Line No. 1", suggesting that Boucicault managed a French theatre company at Drury Lane in 1848 after his return from france; Calthrop believed tracing this |french company will give a clue to Boucicault's activities in France 1845-1848;. Item 6 -- a newspaper cutting from The Times, Wednesday, November 17, 1965, titled "Battle to Save Old Paris Theatre"; is describes attempts to save the Ambigu Theatre from demolition. Boucicault is not mentioned in the article, but Calthrop has marked the cutting "1848";. Item 7 -- 3 letters from a Jersey Librarian in response to enquiries by Christopher Calthrop about Dion Boucicault staying on Jersey in the 1840s (apparently Boucicault sent at least one letter from St. Helier in 1846); the librarian reports that he has found no information at all; it seems that Calthrop also speculated about Anne Guiot dying on Jersey, but no information was found; . Item 8 -- photocopy of the September 1952 Bulletin of the Jersey Society in London, which includes an article titled "The Theatre in Jersey" by Advocate Raoul Lempriere; Boucicault is not mentioned;. Item 9 -- 2 letters from the Honorary Librarian of the Societe Jersiaise in response to enquiries about Boucicault's stay on Jersey in 1846, again without result.
The letters are from the following correspondents -- Christopher Calthrop; Raymond Jalle, Deputy and Local History Librarian, Jersey Public Libraries, St. Helier; Mrs. B. de Veulle, Honorary Librarian of the Societe Jersiaise, Jersey
