Item 1 -- photocopy of part of a letter, dated 11 May 1870, from John Hollingshead of the Gaiety Theatre relating to an agreement between Chatterton and Boucicault about the amount of rent to be paid for the Drury Lane Theatre for the staging of FORMOSA; Original of the letter held by the Huntington Library, San Marino, California. Item 2 -- transcript of an article in The Spirit of the Times, 11 November, 1876, outlining the Boucicault-Chatterton controversy; also cited is an excerpt from the actor J. C. Williamson's autobiography J. C. Williamson's Life-Story Told in His Own Words mentioning a Boucicault related incident in San Francisco and giving his view of the Boucicault-Chatterton dispute;. Item 3 -- transcripts of two articles; an article in The Spirit of the Times, 20 January, 1877, about the Boucicault-Chatterton controversy; and a transcript of an unidentified cutting from the Maggie Moore Collection in the New York Public Library, May, 1876, in which J. C. Williamson's acting in THE COLLEEN BAWN is praised; on the back are notes by Calthrop listing articles in The Era from this period;. Item 4 -- 4 letters from an American correspondent discussing the relationship between Boucicault and J. C. Williamson. Item 5 -- transcript of a letter, dated 20/3/80, from J. C. Williamson to someone called "Buck", describing his dealings with Boucicault in relation to a play whose title is not mentioned. Item 6 -- photocopy of a rough draft of a memorandum of agreement between J. C. Williamson and Dion Boucicault regarding an engagement for Boucicault and a group of actors to perform in Australia in 1883; this is accompanied by a transcript and notes by Christopher calthrop. There is also a photocopy of a memorandum of agreement between Boucicault and Mark Hall, engaging Hall as advance agent for the theatre season of 1884-5.Originals are in Special Collections at the University of South Florida, Tampa |
