| Description | Jessie Brown; or, The Relief of Lucknow tells the story of an event during the Indian Mutiny of 1857-1858. It was first produced at Wallack's Theatre, New York, on 22nd February 1858 and opened at Astely's Theatre, London in 1862. According to theatre legend, no actor would take the part of the treacherous Nena Sahib for fear of being hissed off stage, so Boucicault was forced to play the part himself.
Material for this play consists of a poster for the 1862 production, an illustration of Boucicault as Nena Sahib, a printed script dated 1858 and three items which relate to the relief of Lucknow, but not directly to Boucicault's productions. |
