| Description | Research file compiled by Richard Findlater about the origins of pantomime from folk plays. Included are handwritten and typed notes, as well as news cuttings, about the common features of myth, legends, and rituals and the characteristics of mummers' plays, the Harlequinade, and the burlesque. Findlater also noted the origins of present-day variety turns, such as jugglers, rope walkers, stilt walkers, buffoons and the figure of the fool, and strong men, as well as themes present in pantomime such as farce and realism. Links are also made between the Church and the stage and the importance of symbolism in pantomime. Findlater based his research from texts such as The English Folk-Play by E. K. Chambers published in 1933 and The Mummers' Play by R. J. Tiddy published in 1923. |
