The cover depicts, in lithograph, a central head and shoulders portrait of the performer and three inset dramatic scenes. The first, a man in civilian clothing surrounded by men in uniform; the deserter taken into custody. In the second an older man with arms outstretched, “his father, an old soldier, pleads for him” and in the last the deserter clasps a hand to his face in shock and relief as a messenger arrives with a pardon. |
