| Description | Indenture of sale of land from William Richard Moss to Octavius Edward Coope and Charles Peter Matthews for £275 (Octavius Edward Coope and Charles Peter Matthews (both of Romford, Essex), named as Brewers and co-partners of William Moss).
The piece of land involved is described as being located in Rainham Mark in the Parish of Rainham, Kent. It is described as being enclosed by a quick set hedge, and includes, on the South part, land abutting on the High Road from Chatham to Canterbury, as on the North part, around 163ft of assize. On the East side, the land abuts on hereditaments ‘now or late belonging to [LARGE GAP] Button’, and on the West abuts on hereditaments ‘now or late belonging to’ Walter Stunt’ 56ft or so. In the quoted text, each ‘now’ is ruled out and replaced with ‘then’ in pencil. The land also abuts on all that tenement erected upon the land now divided into two dwellings and used as a Beershop and now in occupation of James Geere. On reverse is a second indenture explaining that Octavius Edward Coope died 27th November 1886. Matthews and Coope were holding the land in trust for Coope and Company Limited, and now request Charles Peter Matthews to convey that land to them, which he agreed to do. There is a note that the Indenture was ‘signed, sealed, and delivered’ by Charles Peter Cooper in the presence of a witness. |

•1878: Indenture of recompence (noted as being endorsed before scheduled Indenture) between Amelia Anne Whittle, Alice Lydia Whittle, and William Richard Moss.
At the very base of the manuscript is the signature ‘W. R Moss’, and a simple red wax seal.
There are two large printed paper stamps glued in the left hand margin of the main parchment. Both printed in red ink and contain ‘78’ upon the bottom of them, probably relating to the year. The top stamp reads ‘seven shillings and six pence’, and the stamp below reads ‘one pound’.
There are also a large amount of pencil alterations to the document, the majority of which are strike-through, which was a common form of highlighting areas of a document. In some places there are word alterations, which seem to be almost entirely changes to the tense, turning ‘now’s into ‘then’s, probably indicating the death or passing of property of the originally named individual. |
